Bright Horizons 3 Cruise

  • Bright Horizons 3 Cruise (also known as the Evolution Emanation cruise, February 27 – March 9, 2009) was an evolutionary science-themed InSight Cruise organized in partnership with Scientific American, sailing through the Panama Canal aboard Holland America Line's M.S. Zuiderdam, departing from and returning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
  • Key Presenters & Curriculum

    • The cruise featured a seminar track focused on evolutionary biology and genetics:
      • Jerry Coyne (Evolutionary Biologist, University of Chicago): Presented a series of lectures detailing natural selection and speciation, coinciding with the publication of his book Why Evolution is True.
      • Mohamed Noor (Geneticist, Duke University): Hosted a hands-on DNA extraction workshop. During this workshop, Randal cracked a memorable pun about wearing the vials of extracted DNA to dinner. See Wearing Genes on Formal Night.
      • Randal Schwartz: Attended as part of the technical support group, assisting with coordination and digital photography operations.
