Wearing Genes on Formal Night
- A memorable pun delivered during a genetics workshop on the Bright Horizons 3 cruise.
The DNA Extraction Workshop
- During the February–March 2009 Bright Horizons 3 (Evolution Emanation) science cruise, geneticist Mohamed Noor hosted a hands-on genetics workshop.
- In the class, attendees swabbed their mouths and processed the samples to extract their own genetic material, making the DNA strands visible inside a small glass vial.
- The class attached lanyards to the vials so they could wear their extracted DNA around their necks.
The Punch Line
- Seeing the participants wearing their vials, Mohamed Noor smiled and remarked: "Yeah, you can proudly wear this to dinner tonight!"
- Since the cruise ship scheduled its formal dining night that same evening, I immediately shouted back:
"No you can't wear these to dinner TONIGHT... it's FORMAL night... No Jeans (Genes)!"
- The quick-witted pun brought down the house with huge laughter from Mohamed and the entire class.
