Unix V6

  • Unix V6

  • Research Unix Version 6 (Unix V6), released by Bell Labs in May 1975, was the first widely distributed version of Unix outside of Bell Labs, running on DEC PDP-11 minicomputers.
  • Unix V6 was the version documented in the famous Lions' Commentary on UNIX 6th Edition.
  • In 1977, Randal Schwartz made his first contact with Unix by dialing into a Unix V6 PDP-11 system at Reed College, executing ls /usr/games and learning Unix by exploring the system. See First Unix Experience in 1977.
These facts are as Randal recalls them, but much time has passed for most of this. If you find a factual error, please email realmerlyn@gmail.com.
