- Kevin Hornych was Randal Schwartz's closest childhood best friend in Gladstone, Oregon, beginning in 5th grade after Randal skipped two grades.
- Bonding over their shared working-class backgrounds, Kevin was the charismatic "bad boy" to Randal's straight-laced intellectual demeanor, famously convincing Randal to play hooky for a week in 9th grade to hang out in the woods.
- When Randal moved to Colton for high school, their desire to keep communicating inspired Randal to write the IDES chat and email system on the central HP 2000 host, which Kevin helped champion and spread among Gladstone students.
