- Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a leading global research university located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, world-renowned for its computer science and robotics programs.
- In the late 1980s and early 1990s, CMU partnered with Intel (under DARPA sponsorship) to design and build the iWarp systolic array supercomputer chip.
- Randal Schwartz was the systems administrator on the Intel side in Oregon supporting the engineering team and connecting them over the early Internet with CMU researchers.
