XML Xcursion

  • XML Xcursion (January 22 – January 29, 2001) was a technology-focused Geek Cruise held aboard the Holland America Line's M.S. Volendam, sailing the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
  • Key Presenters & Curriculum

    • Simon St. Laurent: Taught XML Linking Language (XLink), XPointer, XML Transformations, and remodeling traditional web applications for XML.
    • Tim Bray: Co-author of the XML 1.0 specification, who presented on XML standards. I had previously met Tim at a Web conference in 1999, and it was great to catch up with him again on board.
    • Tad McClellan: Taught as an instructor representing Stonehenge Consulting Services, Inc..
    • Randal Schwartz: Taught Perl classes on parsing XML.
    • Other key community attendees included Sean McGrath and Henrik.
  • Onboard Culture & Preboard Party

    • The "XML Songs" Request: At the preboard party at the hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Capt'n Neil Bauman famously walked up to the lounge singer and requested "XML songs." The singer just smiled in complete confusion, not having any idea what XML was.
    • The cruise served as a key meeting point for the early XML and Perl communities, bridging the gap between structured document markup and programmatic text processing.
