MacMania 2 and PerlWhirl 2003
- MacMania 2 and PerlWhirl 2003 (June 1 – June 8, 2003) was one of the first joint cruises organized by Geek Cruises, combining MacMania II (co-produced with Macworld) and PerlWhirl 2003 aboard the Norwegian Star, departing from Honolulu and touring the Hawaiian Islands.
Very Busy Double Roles
- This was a highly demanding event for me. I served as a Perl instructor for PerlWhirl and simultaneously acted as the production assistant and technical curriculum coordinator for the joint groups.
Coincident CruiseTrek, Wil Wheaton & Chase Masterson
- A Star Trek cruise (CruiseTrek) was coincidentally taking place on the same ship.
- During the voyage, I met actor and author Wil Wheaton, who was teaching himself Perl programming using the Llama book (Learning Perl). This meeting led to long-term friendly interactions and is detailed in the first chapter of Wil's memoir, Just a Geek. See Meeting Wil Wheaton on PerlWhirl Cruise.
- I also met actress Chase Masterson (who played Leeta on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) at the ship's bar. Not having watched DS9, I didn't know who she was, but we started up a conversation and I urged her to join the upcoming DragonCon convention where I was already confirmed as a guest. She took my advice, attended, and ended up presenting at one of the convention's awards banquets.
