CONCEPT

UUCP

  • UUCP

  • UUCP (Unix-to-Unix Copy) is a suite of computer programs and protocols that allowed computers to transmit files and execute remote commands over dial-up telephone lines and point-to-point serial links.
  • UUCP served as the primary transport backbone for early store-and-forward networks including Usenet and worldwide Unix email routing throughout the 1980s.
  • In 1982, while working at Tektronix (a major Pacific Northwest UUCP routing hub), I discovered a critical remote execution vulnerability in uux and coordinated the fix directly with Dennis Ritchie at Bell Labs. See Finding the UUX Vulnerability and Emailing Dennis Ritchie.
These facts are as Randal recalls them, but much time has passed for most of this. If you find a factual error, please email realmerlyn@gmail.com.
