Pennywhistle 103 Modem

  • Pennywhistle 103 Modem

  • The Pennywhistle 103 was an acoustic coupler modem designed by Lee Felsenstein in 1976 and marketed by M&R Enterprises. It allowed microcomputers to communicate over standard telephone handsets at 110 to 300 baud using Bell 103 audio frequency shift keying.
  • In 1977, I used a Pennywhistle 103 paired with my Sol-20 microcomputer to dial into Reed College at 110 baud and learn Unix and C. See First Unix Experience in 1977.
