The Microphone Moment at Google IO 2024

  • The Microphone Moment at Google IO 2024

  • During Event/Google I/O 2024, the presenters in both the main opening keynote and the Developer keynote mentioned absolutely nothing about Flutter. Not a single word. Instead, they devoted substantial stage time to Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP).
  • The Panic in the Field

    • Across developer blog posts and social feeds, the reaction was immediate and panicked: "Look at what Google just did. They spent all their time on KMP and didn't even utter the word Flutter. I guess Google is abandoning Flutter."
    • As a founding Flutter Google Developer Expert (GDE), I was frustrated and genuinely concerned about the ripple effect on developer trust and enterprise adoption.
  • The Closed-Door Meeting

    • On the second day of the summit, there was a private, closed-door session between the Google Developer Experts and five Google Senior Vice Presidents, equipped with an open microphone for questions.
    • I walked up, took the mic in both hands, looked the leadership team in the eye, and spoke truth to power:
      • > "I'm out in the field every single week listening to the community. They watched the keynotes you streamed yesterday, and they are convinced Google is abandoning Flutter.
      • > Now, I know from the inside that you are committed. I see what's being built. I see our enterprise clients and customers adopting Flutter every day. But I can be out there all day long telling people 'Flutter is in fine shape,' and the moment an official Google channel omits Flutter from the main stage, my voice gets drowned out.
      • > You guys, standing at the front of this room, need to say what I'm saying—loudly, clearly, and to a lot more people."
  • The Standing Ovation

    • As soon as I finished, the Vice President of the Android division stood up right behind me and publicly agreed, acknowledging that cross-platform developer trust required proactive, unified leadership from the very top.
    • When I sat down, the entire room erupted into a standing ovation. For the next two days of the summit, fellow GDEs continually came up to thank me and debrief on the moment. Later at the summit, the presiding Senior VP recognized me by name from the main stage.
  • The Role of "The Bridge"

    • I've always viewed my role as The Bridge: connecting the community's ground reality to leadership, and communicating the project's true trajectory back to the community. Sometimes, being the bridge means taking the microphone when nobody else will.
