Lyle Settle

Tektronix and Mentorship

• Lyle was one of Randal's early managers and mentors at Tektronix in Beaverton, Oregon (alongside Jack Falk).
• Together with Jack Falk, Lyle taught Randal the fundamentals of clear technical writing, audience analysis, and engineering leadership.

Bringing Randal to Tandem Computers

• After leaving Beaverton and moving back to Silicon Valley, Lyle joined Tandem Computers in Cupertino, California.
• Lyle brought Randal in as a technical writing contractor at Tandem for nearly three years (1986–1989), where Randal authored the critical Security Administration Guide for the Guardian operating system and Safeguard under the Department of Defense Orange Book (C2) evaluation program.

Recognition and Friendship

• Lyle Settle (along with Jack Falk) is acknowledged by Randal in the acknowledgments of his seminal O'Reilly Media books, including Programming Perl and Learning Perl.
• When Randal faced legal troubles during the Intel case in 1995, Lyle wrote a heartfelt letter of support to the judge testifying to Randal's character and contributions.
